Morel Mushroom

Morel

Morchella esculenta

Edible and highly sought after for its earthy, nutty flavor. Not to be confused with the poisonous, false morel. True morel mushrooms feature distinct pitted caps with a spongelike appearance and when sliced lengthwise, both the cap and stem are completely hollow.

Chanterelle Mushroom

Golden Chanterelle

Cantharellus cibarius

Edible! Chantrelles do not have true gills, but rather blunt ridges that extend down the stem. This is often used to distinguish them from their look-alikes, the false chanterelle. In addition, when cut, the inside is white. This is helpful to distinguish it from Jack-o-lantern mushrooms which, when cut open, are orange.

Fly Agaric Mushroom

Fly Agaric

Amanita muscaria

Poisonous! When mature, this Aminita (there are many varieties and colors) is easily recognizable. When young, these mushrooms can be mistaken for the edible puffball mushroom. Always double check your mushrooms before consumption.

Shaggy Mane Mushroom

Shaggy Mane

Coprinus Comatus

Edible and delicious! Shaggy mane mushrooms need to be consumed quickly, before they start to deliquesce (turn into ink). This process can begin as soon as a few hours after picking.
